Alcohol Inks Butterfly

Hello, welcome to my blog!!

I want to start out by thanking everyone for the support and nice comments you all leave for me. I truly appreciate the support of this blog!! I enjoy card making and bringing my creations to you, this wouldn't be possible without your support, so again, thank you!!!

For today's card, I use Alcohol Ink along with an Alloy to create a panel that I will use for an inlay technique. I will be using cardstock and a background stamp from Gina K. Designs. I like to add subtle texture to a plain background and this stamp adds just the right amount. I will be using a butterfly die from Paper Rose Studio for a focal image and inlay my alcohol inked pieces. This is a large die that takes up a good portion of the card front leaving room for a simple greeting or sentiment.
Let's get started!!

I will be doing all of my work today on my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat.

I start by cutting a piece of Yupo Paper in half using my Tim Holtz Guillotine Paper Trimmer. I then take my 3 1/2" x 5" panel and add drops of  Mojito Alcohol Ink, Fiesta Alcohol Ink and Laguna Alcohol Ink. I then add a few drops of Gilded Alloy Alcohol Ink and add drops of Blending Solution over the panel. Next, I take my Air Blower and move the ink around, breaking up the alloys until I'm satisfied with the look. I then set the panel aside to dry.

Taking my Vanessa Butterfly Large Die and a piece of Black Cardstock, I run them through my Big Shot Die Cut Machine. I then poke out all of the pieces using my Craft Pick. Next, I add Liquid Glue to the back of the die cut and press onto a piece of plain copy paper. *I'm mounting my die cut to the copy paper so that I have something to adhere my inlay pieces to. Using my Razor Edge Shears, I cut around the entire butterfly trimming off the excess copy paper.

Using the same butterfly die, I cut out of my alcohol inked panel running them through my Big Shot. I poke out all of the pieces, keeping them in order as best I can. Keeping them in order helps when inlaying the pieces. **Anytime I die cut alcohol inked pieces, I like to lay a thin piece of copy paper between the inked panel and cutting plates, this keeps the plates clean. Another big tip, alcohol ink will come off the panel and stick to the dies in some areas. To easily clean this, I take a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and clean the entire cutting side of the die.

Now for the fun part!! (I love die inlaying, I find it so relaxing!!) Using Liquid Glue, I add small amounts to the open/white areas of my die cut. I then use my Jewel Picker to pick up the small alcohol inked pieces then start inlaying them into the black butterfly, gently pressing them into place. I like to add glue to a few areas at a time, add the pieces then add glue to a few more areas until all pieces area in place.

Taking my Friend Layered Die, I cut out of black cardstock three times running them through my Big Shot. I then stack and glue together using Liquid Glue.

For my background, I cut a 2 3/4" x 5 1/2" piece of Kraft Cardstock and place into my MISTI Stamp Positioner. I then take my Elegant Script Background Stamp and stamp the panel with Kraft Ink.

I now take my card base along with the stamped panel and set them into my MISTI. I lay out my card design to figure out where I want to stamp my sentiment. I line up a sentiment from the Sentiment Strips 2 Stamp Set and pick up the stamp with the door of my MISTI. I remove the card base, butterfly and greeting and stamp the sentiment using Versafine Clair Nocturn Ink. Using Double Sided Tape, I adhere my panel onto a Passionate Pink Cardstock card base just off center.

To give my background panel a finished look and to compliment the gold alloy in the butterfly, I add a thin strip of Mirrored Cardstock to each side of the panel using Liquid Glue.

I will be mounting my greeting hanging off the inked panel. To make the greeting the same height, I cut an additional "d" and glue it behind the "d" of my greeting. I use Liquid Glue and mount the greeting just above my sentiment. To give the butterfly and a little dimension, I cut three "body" pieces of the butterfly, glue them together then glue to the underside of the butterfly body. *This takes the place of foam tape and gives stability. I add Liquid Glue to the body only and mount the butterfly at an angle onto the card front and give the wings a little lift, this finishes off my card.

I hope you enjoyed today's bright, colorful card. I just love making alcohol inked backgrounds and what better way to show them off by using the die cut inlay technique!! Cutting the Yupo paper in half is a great way to make quick panels to use for smaller die cuts. This butterfly die is so perfect for inlaying and also comes in a smaller size.

  1. Hi, Jeannie - I love ALL your cards and your blog, especially how thorough it is and all the tiny tips and fixes you share.
I have a quick question about today's card. At the end, it doesn't look like you glued down the entire butterfly- like the left wing that hangs off the kraft panel isn't glued down. Am I not seeing that right? Or is just the body (not the wings) glued down?
Thanks for all your work on the blog and beautiful inspiration!

    1. Hello, Michelle!! You are correct, I only adhered the body to the card and gave the wings a little lift. Thank you for that question, I clarified it in the blog now. Thank you also for your kind comments, I'm glad you enjoy my blog. Have a wonderful day!!

Embossing With Stencils

Hello, welcome to my blog! Today's card project focuses on heat embossing with stencils. Stencils are great for ink blending and are economical. Did you know you can also heat emboss with your stencils? I am showing an example of white heat embossing, but you could also ink blend your stencil then heat emboss with clear embossing powder, if you don't mind getting your embossing pad dirty. Some people have a clean embossing pad dedicated for embossing only, and another embossing pad that they use for different techniques that may get the pad dirty. Let's get started!! To start, I cut a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" white Neenah cardstock panel using my Tim Holtz Guillotine paper trimmer. I add Gina K. Designs Adhesive Dot Runner  to the corners on the back side of my white card panel to temporarily hold it down onto my Tonic Studios Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat . Next, I prep my panel with my Anti Static powder bag. I then place my Gina K. Designs Water Droplets stencil
