Agate Technique With Alcohol Inks

Hello, welcome to my blog!!

Today, I played around with a technique called "Agates" using Ranger Alcohol Pearl Inks. I did this technique on Matte Black Alcohol Cardstock. To be able to see the color of my inks on the black cardstock, I also use Snow Cap White Mixative . This technique gives sort of a speckled, marbled look. Alcohol Inks look great on Yupo Paper, Glossy Cardstock or Alcohol Ink Cardstock, but today I wanted to use the Black Alcohol Ink Cardstock to let some of the black show through. Let's get started!!

I will be doing all of my work today on my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat.

To start, I cut a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" out of Matte Black Alcohol Ink Cardstock using my Tim Holtz Guillotine Paper Trimmer. Next, I take an Ink Blending Tool With Felt Applicator and  apply several drops of Snow Cap Alcohol Ink Mixtative, next I add Sublime Alcohol Ink Pearl, then Splendor Alcohol Ink Pearl, followed by Tranquil Alcohol Ink Pearl. To help the inks blend, I add a few drops of Alcohol Blending Solution. I now take the inked tool and pounce it onto the Matte Black Alcohol Ink Cardstock panel, pouncing it randomly around until I have the panel filled, but leaving some of the black showing through. *If more color is desired, just add a few more drops to the felt pad and pounce again onto the panel.

Working on the Glass Media Mat with alcohol inks is so easy. You never have to worry about the inks running off of the paper as clean up is a breeze! This was the ink that ran over the edges of my panel. I took isopropyl alcohol on a couple of cotton balls, rubbed it around over the ink then wiped off with a paper towel, that's it... good as new!!

To add texture and interest, I place my inked panel into my Botanical 3D Embossing Folder and run it through my Big Shot Die Cut Machine. *Be sure to check your die cut machine's sandwich order for 3D folders as they are extra thick.

I now create a frame for my panel. I take my Stitched Rectangle Die that gives stitching on the inside of the frame. I line up over a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" Black Cardstock Panel and hold down with Purple Tape then run it through my Big Shot Die Cut Machine. I add Double Sided Adhesive Tape to the back of the frame, remove the release paper then adhere over my inked panel. I then mount onto a white cardstock card base.

Next, I cut out of white cardstock two times using my Mega Hello Die and the shadow out of black cardstock once, running them through my Big Shot Die Cut Machine. Using Liquid Glue, I stack and glue the two white die cuts together, then glue onto the shadow die cut.

I now choose a sentiment from Scripted Bold Sentiment 2 Stamp Set. I place a scrap piece of black cardstock into my MISTI Stamp Positioner and prep it with my Anti Static Powder Bag then stamp using Versamark Embossing Ink. I add Detail White Embossing Powder and heat set with my Heat Tool. I then trim down to a thin strip.

I add Foam Tape to the back of my die cut greeting and adhere over the top of my card front. I add Liquid Glue to the sentiment strip and mount just under the greeting, butting up against the frame. To finish off, I add a few Water Droplets using Liquid Glue and this completes my card.

I hope you enjoyed today's card and the look of the Agate technique. Using the white mixative with the bright, vibrant alcohol pearls can really tone the color down to be soft and milky. The more mixative you use, the softer the color will be. If you want the color to be more vibrant, use less mixative. I really like the way the embossing folder "cracked" some of the areas on the black cardstock, which allowed the black to show through. These pictures do not capture it, but the ink is shimmery and beautiful!

  1. I don’t have the alcohol ink pearls, but just the regular alcohol inks. Would those work?

    1. Hi Sabrina! I would think they would work if you have the Snow Cap Mixative? The Pearls are vibrant and have the shimmer. The regular alcohol inks may be lighter in color mixed with the white. Give it a try!

Embossing With Stencils

Hello, welcome to my blog! Today's card project focuses on heat embossing with stencils. Stencils are great for ink blending and are economical. Did you know you can also heat emboss with your stencils? I am showing an example of white heat embossing, but you could also ink blend your stencil then heat emboss with clear embossing powder, if you don't mind getting your embossing pad dirty. Some people have a clean embossing pad dedicated for embossing only, and another embossing pad that they use for different techniques that may get the pad dirty. Let's get started!! To start, I cut a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" white Neenah cardstock panel using my Tim Holtz Guillotine paper trimmer. I add Gina K. Designs Adhesive Dot Runner  to the corners on the back side of my white card panel to temporarily hold it down onto my Tonic Studios Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat . Next, I prep my panel with my Anti Static powder bag. I then place my Gina K. Designs Water Droplets stencil
