***I want to remind everyone that Gina K. Designs has a brand new release on Monday, August 16 that goes live at 7:00pm CST. I will have a card on my blog Monday using one of her new stamp sets when the release goes live!
Today I have a card colored using Prismacolor Premiere Colored Pencils then blended using Gamsol. This is a great technique that breaks down the wax from the colored pencils leaving behind a nice blended look. This is my first time creating a card using Gamsol and I understand in order for the Gamsol to work you must use a wax based pencil. There are many other kinds of colored pencils out on the market but I have no knowledge of how they work with Gamsol, I just know that the Prismacolor "Premiere" pencils work great. Gamsol is an odorless mineral spirit that breaks down the wax and blends the pencil lines using a blending stump. Though I am just learning how to use the Gamsol and colored pencils myself I found it easy to use. *If you are looking to purchase a colored pencil set for yourself, be sure to look into which colors come in each set. I purchased a 48 count set and after receiving it I realized there were no gray pencils included in the set. I will be purchasing some single gray pencils to add to my collection in the future. Gina K. Designs has many videos on her YouTube channel using these products if you would like to learn more about the technique. All of the inks, stamps and cardstock I use on today's card are from Gina K. Designs. Let's get started!!
I will be doing all of my work today on my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat.
To start, I take the second largest die from the Master Layout 1 Die Set and cut out of White Cardstock, running them through my Big Shot Die Cut Machine. I then place the panel into my MISTI Stamp Positioner and stamp the large image from the Stay Positive Stamp Set using Amalgam Obsidian Ink. I want to be sure the ink is dry before I start my coloring so I set the panel aside to dry for about 15 minutes.
I will be using my 48 Prismacolor Premiere Colored Pencil Set for my coloring. Once the ink is completely dry I take PC956 to add some color to the base of each petal. I then take my Blending Stump and dip it into the Gamsol so that the end is good and saturated. Using a circular motion I go over the colored areas, pulling the color out a bit. I dip the Blending Stump back into the Gamsol whenever the stump gets dry or when working on a new petal. I repeat the process until all of the petals have been blended. I want to fade the color out and leave the ends of the petals white.
For my second layer of color I add PC1008 which is slightly darker to the base of each petal. I then use the Blending Stump with Gamsol to blend the color out a bit trying not to completely cover up the previous color. I repeat the process until all of the petals have been blended.
To add a little color variation I add a small amount of PC995 to the base of each petal then use the Blending Stump and Gamsol to blend the color. However, for this last color I tried a different application to blend the color. When applying the Gamsol, I take the Blending Stump and use a flicking motion. I start at the base where the color is and pull or flick the Blending Stump away from the base to achieve more of a wispy edge going out towards the end of the petal. I may try this method for all of my color blending in the future when working on flowers as I feel that it gives a softer look when transitioning to white.
To finish off my coloring I add PC932 to the very center of the flower and add PC995 to the stamen pieces standing up. I then use the Blending Stump with Gamsol to soften the color. For an added touch I took my White Gel Pen and made tiny dots to the center just to add some texture and highlights. In the end I don't think it added much, LOL.
I want to create a soft background for my card but don't want any ink getting on my colored image. I place a piece of Masking Magic into my MISTI and stamp the same image from the Stay Positive Stamp Set and stamp it onto the masking paper. I then use my Micro Tip Scissors to cut the image out, cutting on the lines of the image. I then remove the release paper and place the cut out mask over my colored image. *To avoid a "halo" around a masked image when ink blending be sure to cut directly on the outline of the stamped image.
Next, I use some low tack tape and place it around all four edges of my panel. Using my Blending Brushes I first blend Sea Glass Ink around the edges of the tape fading out to white as I get towards the image. I then blend Turquoise Sea Ink around the tape fading into the previous color. *Be sure to use a low tack tape to cover the edges of the panel. You could also stick the tape to your arm or clothing to remove some of the tack.
Being careful not to tear the panel I remove the tape, slowly pulling it back on itself at an angle. I then carefully remove the mask. I now have a soft blended background that fades out as it gets close to the image.
I now place my panel back into my MISTI to stamp my greeting. Choosing a greeting from the Flowers For You Stamp Set I stamp it onto the panel using Amalgam Obsidian Ink. I then choose a sentiment from the same stamp set and stamp it just below my greeting with Amalgam Obsidian Ink.
I now take the largest layering die from the Master Layout 1 Die Set and cut out of Black Cardstock, running them through my Big Shot. Using Terrific Tape I adhere my colored panel onto the black panel.
Next I place a 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece of Lovely Lavender Cardstock into my Scor Buddy and score it at 4 1/4" creating a side folding card base. I add Foam Tape to the back of my panel and mount it onto the card base.
Using my Jewel Picker I add some Dew Drops with Liquid Glue and this completes my card.
I hope you enjoyed today's card, I am happy with the way it turned out. Though I am just learning how to use Gamsol, it was quite easy to blend the Prismacolor Premiere pencils. This coloring technique will be great for coloring critters, scenery or any stamped images! Have a wonderful weekend, I will be back on Monday night with a card using a brand new stamp set from Gina's release!!
