Wow, it feels like I have been out of the loop for a long time! We celebrated the marriage of our middle son and what a beautiful day it was! There is so much pride in watching your children walk down the aisle, starting a new chapter in their lives. We now have four sons, three daughters, two daughter in-laws and four grandchildren, we are truly blessed!

Have you heard all the buzz over the edge to edge shaker cards? I watched a video from Nina Marie on this technique and couldn't wait to try it out! I've made a few of these shaker cards recently and thought I would incorporate this technique into today's card. Save the packaging from your cardstock, dies and stamp sets as it is the perfect material for this technique! I will be using the Watercolor Flowers stamp set from Gina K. to do some shaded stamping for my focal image. I love the look of these watercolor images, such a loose wispy design. To give a little shading to my stamped images I use a blending brush to apply a darker ink shade onto the stamp itself then stamp over the previous image. This adds a little depth and contrast to an otherwise plain stamped image. All of the stamps, inks and cardstock I use are from Gina K. Designs, including two of her Master Layout die sets. Let's get started!!

I will be doing all of my work today on my Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat.

To start I place a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" panel of White Cardstock into my MISTI Stamp Positioner. I then take a stem image from the Watercolor Flowers Stamp Set and stamp it onto the panel using Jelly Bean Green Ink. Leaving the image still attached to the door of my MISTI I use my Blending Brush and tap onto the stem and base of the leaves Fresh Asparagus Ink then stamp it onto my previously stamped image. I repeat this a couple of times until I am satisfied with the shading results. *Using a blending brush to apply the ink directly to the stamp gives a soft blended look without any harsh lines.

Next, I take the other stem image from the Watercolor Flowers Stamp Set and line it up next to my previously stamped image, overlapping just a bit and stamp using Jelly Bean Green Ink. I again use my Blending Brush to tap Fresh Asparagus Ink onto the stem and the base of the leaves on the stamp then stamp it over my previously stamped image. I repeat this process until I am satisfied with the shading.

I now choose two of the flower images from the Watercolor Flowers Stamp Set and line them up over the stems. I then use my Blending Brush to apply Sweet Mango Ink to the center of the flowers and stamp them onto the panel. Next, I ink up both stamps with Innocent Pink Ink and use my finger tip to remove the ink from the center of each flower and stamp the images onto the panel.

To add a little more contrast I use my Blending Brush to add Dusty Rose Ink to the centers of each flower and again use my finger tip to remove the ink from the very center of each stamp (so that the centers stay the mango color). I then stamp the panel and now I have shaded petals with a light colored center. To deepened the centers of the flowers a bit I add more Sweet Mango Ink with my Blending Brush to the center of each stamp and stamp it onto my panel and this completes my ink shading.

To trim down my panel I take the stitched rectangle from the Master Layouts 5 Die Set and lay it out so that the flowers are centered while leaving an open area along the right bottom corner as this is where I will be stamping my sentiment. I then run them through my Big Shot Die Cut Machine.

Next, I place the panel back into my MISTI then take a sentiment from the Watercolor Flowers Stamp Set and stamp it onto the bottom right side of my panel using Amalgam Obsidian Ink.

To break up the white area of my panel and add a little interest I place a small drop of Black Soot Paint onto my Glass Mat with a little water to thin it out just a bit. I then take a small paintbrush to pick up the paint and light splatter it onto my panel. Adding the black splatter also ties in with the sentiment. I then set the panel aside for a few minutes to let it completely dry.

Taking a piece of clear packaging (this was from a package of cardstock) I trim it down to be about 3 3/4" x 5" using my Guillotine Paper Trimmer. I then add Terrific Tape to the back of my panel on all four sides making sure to cover the entire edges. I remove the release paper and begin folding the edges of the packaging over the adhesive. I start at the bottom edge of the panel and fold over the packaging at the center then fold over to the corners, pressing my finger across it to make sure it is completely adhered. I then repeat this process for each of the sides making sure to press the packaging down good at the corners. I DO NOT adhere the top down yet as I first need to add my shaker elements.

Next, I take some Clear Quartz Solid Sequins and pour some between the panel and packaging so they are over my stamped image. I can now flip the panel over and adhere down the top flap of packaging so that all of the sequins are now secured in the shaker panel. Using my Micro Tip Scissors I trim away the overhang from all four corners. I now have an edge to edge shaker panel!

Taking the large scallop die from the Master Layouts 4 Die Set I cut out of Innocent Pink Cardstock, running them through my Big Shot. I then add Terrific Tape to the back of my shaker panel and adhere it to the center of the scallop panel.

Next, I place a 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece of White Cardstock into my Scor Buddy and score it at 4 1/4" creating a side folding card base. I add Foam Tape to the back of my panel and adhere it onto the card base and this completes my card.

I hope you enjoyed this fun edge to edge shaker card, I love the simplicity of it. I feel the ink shading really adds to the "watercolor" look of these images. It gives off such a soft blended look to these delicate stamped images. I think this card would also look great in bolder colors for more contrast. Mark your calendars for Gina's new upcoming release on July 19th at 7:00pm CST! She will be releasing a brand new kit along with TWO more Master Layout die sets and many other stamp sets!! I use at least one set of Gina's Master Layout dies on almost every card I make. I love the perfect layering and mats that these dies create, no more measuring or guessing. If you'd like to learn more about these edge to edge shaker cards and have not yet checked out Nina's video, I encourage you to do so. It is a very informative video showing the process on how to create these cards. You can find the video under Simon Says Stamp's YouTube channel "Edge To Edge Birthday Shaker".

  1. What a pretty card! I love the way you created the colouring, by using blender brushes. I never would have thought of doing that. The shaker card is adorable! Can't wait to try out this technique. Thanks so much for sharing.

    1. Thank you so much Sheree!! I love to apply ink to the stamps using a blending brush when adding shading to an image. It really gives it a soft look and eliminates the harsh lines where the colors meet. Have fun with the technique, these cards are so fun!

I will be using kraft cardstock as well as black cardstock. This is a fun technique to use on any color of cardstock. I wanted to show the look on a light colored cardstock vs a dark color. The key to using any color of cardstock is to first lay down white pigment ink follo

Embossing With Stencils

Hello, welcome to my blog! Today's card project focuses on heat embossing with stencils. Stencils are great for ink blending and are economical. Did you know you can also heat emboss with your stencils? I am showing an example of white heat embossing, but you could also ink blend your stencil then heat emboss with clear embossing powder, if you don't mind getting your embossing pad dirty. Some people have a clean embossing pad dedicated for embossing only, and another embossing pad that they use for different techniques that may get the pad dirty. Let's get started!! To start, I cut a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" white Neenah cardstock panel using my Tim Holtz Guillotine paper trimmer. I add Gina K. Designs Adhesive Dot Runner  to the corners on the back side of my white card panel to temporarily hold it down onto my Tonic Studios Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat . Next, I prep my panel with my Anti Static powder bag. I then place my Gina K. Designs Water Droplets stencil
